Ecuador going ‘bananas’ over tourism promotion

I really enjoy coming up with new marketing ideas, it’s such a wonderfully creative and strategic outlet for me. I also appreciate it when I see out-of-the-box thinking from other marketers. For example, the Ecuadorian tourism department has a very limited budget to promote their country as a tourist destination, so they came up with an inexpensive way of doing it via a strength they have have as a nation…bananas!

Ecuador exports a whole lot of bananas, so the tourism folks came up with the idea of placing a QR code just below the export label that goes on each banana.  When folks scan the QR code, they are taken to a well produced tourism video of the country. It’s a brilliant and very affordable promotional campaign. Because the campaign is unique, they will get a lot of traction from media folks writing about it. Just like I’m doing now.
