Alaskan Adventure: An Epic Conclusion to My 50-State Journey

I never set out to visit all 50 states, but as the years passed and the number grew—47, 48, then 49—the unspoken challenge began to stir within me. One state remained, looming in the distance like a final frontier, a place both wild and elusive. Alaska, with her rugged landscapes and untamed spirit, seemed to keep her distance, slipping through my plans year after year. That was until the fall of 2024, when the stars aligned, and I found myself at the TBEX travel conference, ready to embrace the Last Frontier and finally complete the journey I hadn’t meant to take. [Note: I have provided helpful links for your travel planning throughout.]

Alaskan Adventure

Before TBEX began, I had the chance to whet my Alaska adventure appetite with a tour led by Revel Treks + Tours, owned and run by Kierre Childers. Kierre, an accomplished guide and wilderness expert, brought more than just her expertise to the journey—her charming personality and deep knowledge of the area infused every moment with intrigue. She pointed out edible vegetation along our paths and shared fascinating stories about the land, transforming each trail and vista into a living tapestry of history and nature.

The itinerary for our adventure offered a diverse taste of Alaska’s rugged beauty:

  • Hiking in the Chugach Mountains one day, surrounded by towering peaks and wild scenery. The next we found ourselves exploring the stunning Hatcher Pass and Independence Mine, now a historical park.
  • Biking around the serene glacial waters of Eklutna Lake.
  • Kayaking on the clear blue waters, where we paddled among reflections of the mountains.
  • A brewery tour in the historic town of Palmer, with a stop at a Fjord-to-Fork restaurant.
  • Home Base at BlueWater BaseCamp: A cozy and scenic retreat nestled in the heart of nature, where we relaxed after each day’s adventure, surrounded by breathtaking views and the serenity of Alaska’s wilderness.

It was the perfect introduction to Alaska’s wild side, and Kierre made sure every moment felt like a true adventure.

Arrival into Anchorage: A Wonderful Alaskan Adventure Welcome

Upon arriving in Anchorage, I was greeted by a beautiful day, the kind that immediately makes you feel like you’re in for something special. My first stop was checking into the Historic Anchorage Hotel, a charming relic of the past that has hosted travelers since the early 20th century. The hotel has retained its vintage charm, with classic architecture and a cozy atmosphere that transports you back in time while offering modern comforts. It was the perfect place to begin my Alaskan adventure.

After settling in, I spent a couple of hours strolling through downtown Anchorage. The city’s streets, lined with local shops and art galleries, offered a glimpse into both its rich history and vibrant culture. I soaked up the ambiance as I wandered, admiring murals, exploring small boutiques, and getting a feel for this northern city that blends wilderness and urban life so effortlessly.

As the evening approached, I made my way to F-Street Station, a well-known local institution famous for its casual atmosphere and incredible seafood. The restaurant is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, and it didn’t disappoint. I enjoyed a delicious meal, featuring some of Alaska’s finest fresh catch, before retreating to my hotel, ready for the adventures that awaited in the days to come.

Day 2: Alaskan Adventure Continues Hiking in the Chugach Mountains

We began our hike in the Chugach Mountains on a mild day, the air crisp but comfortable as we ascended the trail. The incline was fairly steep, guiding us up toward a ridge that promised stunning views above the treeline. However, as often happens in Alaska, the weather began to shift. Up here, the landscape changes in the blink of an eye, and being prepared for unpredictable conditions is key. As we climbed higher, we were reminded of the wild and ever-changing nature of this place.

About halfway up the trail, we stopped to enjoy a fantastic lunch, prepared in advance and perfectly suited for an outdoor feast. We found a scenic spot to sit and take in the vast beauty surrounding us, the ridge still looming ahead. After lunch, Kierre, our guide, shared her knowledge about the wild berries found at this elevation. Though it was late in the season, we eagerly foraged for a variety of berries, including blueberries, crowberries, and the more elusive lingonberries. While the berries weren’t at their prime, it was still fun to sample them and learn about their flavors and significance in the Alaskan ecosystem.

After our berry foraging, we continued onward, the trail narrowing to a rocky ledge. That’s when the snow began to fall—massive, gentle flakes that blanketed the landscape around us. Rather than dampening our spirits, the snowfall seemed to enhance the experience, adding a magical touch to the adventure. We pressed on, undeterred, soaking in the snowy wonderland around us.

Once the hike concluded, we made our way back down and drove to our accommodations. [Click the following link for an article I wrote about this remarkable place called BlueWater BaseCamp]. After checking into our accommodations and taking some time to freshen up, we headed out to dinner in Eagle River to Corks and Hops, a local gem known for its laid-back atmosphere and delicious, locally sourced fare. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day in the wild.

Later that night, back at BlueWater, we gathered around a campfire, enjoying the warmth and the stunning Alaskan night sky. The stars were bright, and the crackle of the fire made for a fitting end to a day filled with adventure.

Day 3: Exploring the Stunning Hatcher Pass and Independence Mine

The weather on our third day was nothing short of spectacular. The early morning mist gave way to the bluest sky you can imagine, perfectly framing the snow-capped peaks that surrounded us as we made our way to Hatcher Pass. This area, nestled in the Talkeetna Mountains, is a favorite for adventurers and nature lovers alike, offering breathtaking vistas and rich history. The pass itself is known for its rugged beauty, winding roads, and panoramic views of alpine landscapes.

We spent the morning exploring Independence Mine Historical Park, a remnant of Alaska’s gold mining past. Once a bustling mining hub in the early 20th century, the mine now stands as a preserved piece of history. Walking through the old buildings and learning about the miners’ lives gave us a glimpse into the hardships and hopes that fueled the gold rush era.

After our exploration, we paused for a quick snack before heading back down the mountain. On our way, we stopped at a scenic overlook to take in the beauty the Little Susitna River, its clear waters rushing through the valley, adding a peaceful soundtrack to the awe-inspiring landscape.

With two more experiences lined up for the day, we had to leave the mountain behind. Our next stop was Bleeding Heart Brewery, a quirky and beloved microbrewery nestled just outside downtown Palmer. Known for its small-batch craft beers, the brewery offers a cozy and relaxed atmosphere with a hint of local flair. We enjoyed a tasting flight paired with appetizers, each beer reflecting the Alaskan spirit of independence and creativity.

Our day didn’t end there. After exploring the town of Palmer, we capped off the evening at Feather + Flour, a fine dining restaurant that focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The meal was nothing short of exceptional, a perfect blend of refined flavors and Alaskan charm. I’ve written a dedicated article about this incredible dining experience, which you can find here.

It was the perfect conclusion to a day filled with natural beauty, history, and local flavor.

Day 4: Kayaking, Biking, and Grilling by Eklutna Lake

The final day of our Alaskan adventure brought us to the breathtaking Eklutna Lake, just a short distance from BlueWater BaseCamp. Nestled at the base of the Chugach Mountains, this glacier-fed lake is not only stunning but also provides Anchorage with its drinking water. Its crystal-clear blue waters stretch for miles, surrounded by towering peaks and dense forest, creating a peaceful and majestic backdrop for our day of activities.

We began the day by kayaking on the calm, serene waters of the lake. Gliding across the lake’s surface, we were treated to panoramic views of snow-capped mountains reflected in the water below. The glacier-fed lake was cold but inviting, and as we paddled further, we felt truly immersed in the raw beauty of Alaska.

Next, we transitioned to mountain biking around the lake. The trail was a perfect mix of challenge and enjoyment, winding through lush greenery and offering occasional views of the lake and surrounding wilderness. The fresh mountain air and the sound of our tires crunching on the trail made for an exhilarating ride, one that felt like a celebration of the rugged landscape around us.

After the biking excursion, we set out on a short hike through the forest, with the lake occasionally peeking through the trees. The trail was gentle but rewarding, allowing us to appreciate the tranquil beauty of the area from a new perspective.

Following our outdoor adventures, we returned to LifeTime Adventures, where a delicious grilled lunch awaited us. The meal was a perfect end to the day’s activities, featuring juicy burgers, savory reindeer sausages, and a refreshing salad—all enjoyed around a crackling campfire. The scent of grilling food mingled with the crisp mountain air, making for a memorable Alaskan meal.

For dessert, we took part in a fun, hands-on activity—a blender bike. We hopped on these stationary bike to blend our own coffee drinks, pedaling our way to the perfect post-adventure treat. It was a lighthearted and unique way to cap off our Alaskan adventure, blending a bit of fun with the perfect fuel for our final moments at Eklutna Lake.

The day was an outstanding blend of outdoor adventure, scenic beauty, and camaraderie, leaving us with lasting memories of this incredible journey in the heart of Alaska.

Alaska’s rugged beauty, ever-changing landscapes, and untamed spirit stand as a testament to the power of nature and the thrill of adventure. It’s fitting that the “Last Frontier” should mark the end of my journey, a place where the horizon stretches infinitely, much like the desire to explore. In the end, Alaska wasn’t just my 50th state—it was a reminder that the road never truly ends; it just leads to new beginnings.
