BlueWater BaseCamp: A Tranquil Escape in Alaska’s Eklutna Valley

Ensconced within towering, snow-capped mountains and surrounded by dense forest, BlueWater BaseCamp offers a peaceful retreat where the beauty of Alaska takes center stage. The air is crisp, the wilderness expansive, and the atmosphere invites you to unwind and reconnect with nature. Here, the days begin with the soft rustle of leaves and ends with the flicker of a campfire under a star-filled sky—well, if it’s not cloudy! On clear nights, you might even be lucky enough to witness the Aurora Borealis dance across the sky, adding an extra layer of magic to this already enchanting location. Whether or not the stars or northern lights are putting on a show, this is still an unforgettable experience that leaves you in awe of Alaska’s natural wonders.

A New Alaskan Retreat

Located just off Highway 1, about 45 minutes northeast of Anchorage, BlueWater BaseCamp is one of the newest additions to Alaska’s collection of boutique lodging options, opening its doors in the spring of 2024. It’s not just a place to stay—it’s a thoughtfully designed retreat built with care and craftsmanship. I had the pleasure of staying here as part of a three-day adventure led by Revel Treks + Tours, who curated an incredible itinerary that included two breathtaking hikes, kayaking on the pristine Eklutna Lake, mountain biking through scenic trails, and even a few surprises along the way.

This retreat offers a blend of luxury and rustic charm, making it perfect for those seeking both comfort and a deep connection to the surrounding wilderness. Its location in the heart of the Eklutna Valley provides guests with easy access to nearby adventures, while also serving as a tranquil haven for relaxation.

Cozy Cabins and Larger Chalets at BlueWater BaseCamp

BlueWater BaseCamp is designed to cater to a variety of travelers, whether you’re embarking on a solo journey, a romantic getaway, or a family trip. The property features eight beautifully crafted cabins, each offering a unique blend of modern amenities and the cozy, intimate feel of a mountain lodge. The smaller Tiny Chalets, like Mitre and Pepper Peak cabins, are perfect for couples, featuring a queen bed, a sitting area, and a well-equipped kitchenette complete with a stove-top, fridge, and even a Keurig coffee maker. I stayed in the Ranger’s Roost, I can attest, perfect for a romantic get-away. It’s worth noting that several of the cabins are even handicap accessible, making this magical place available to a wide range of travelers.

For those traveling with family or a group, the Large Chalets—such as Bold Peak and Twin Peaks—are ideal, accommodating up to six guests. These spacious cabins come with full kitchens, dining areas, and even a loft for extra sleeping space. Every detail has been carefully thought out, from the high-quality linens on the beds to the accessible design of the bathrooms, ensuring that all guests feel comfortable and cared for.

Outdoor Amenities and Gathering Spaces

Event Center

One of the highlights of staying at BlueWater is the abundance of outdoor amenities that enhance the experience. There’s a communal fire pit where guests can gather in the evenings, sharing stories and toasting marshmallows for s’mores. The property also boasts an event center, making it a fantastic choice for weddings, family reunions, or corporate retreats. The beauty of the surrounding landscape, combined with the intimate, well-crafted cabins, provides an unforgettable setting for any event.

The Craftsmanship Behind BlueWater BaseCamp

BlueWater BaseCamp was built by Russ, a contractor with a passion for creating spaces that blend seamlessly with their environment. Together with his wife, Teal, they’ve poured their hearts into making BlueWater a welcoming and comfortable retreat. Their warm hospitality shines through in every interaction, from the personalized service to the thoughtful touches throughout the property.

Russ and his team paid close attention to every detail, ensuring that each cabin is not only functional, but also aesthetically pleasing. The natural wood finishes, the cozy furnishings, and the carefully curated décor all contribute to an atmosphere of understated luxury. It’s the kind of place where you immediately feel at home, surrounded by nature, while enjoying the comforts of modern living.

At BlueWater, you’re not just greeted by Russ and Teal’s warm hospitality—you’ll also meet their two delightful dogs, Ranger and Esmeralda. Ranger, who seems to have the superpower of leaping higher than tall buildings, will impress you with his athleticism and playful spirit. Then there’s Esmeralda, the cutest and furriest puppy you’ve ever seen, who will melt your heart with her big eyes and friendly, wagging tail. Together, they add an extra touch of love to your stay.

Adventures in the Eklutna Valley

While BlueWater itself offers plenty of reasons to relax and stay close to home, the surrounding area is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. The jewel of the region, Eklutna Lake, is just a short drive away, its crystal-clear waters beckoning for kayaking, fishing, or simply enjoying the serene views. Nearby hiking trails take you through forests and up into the mountains, offering stunning vistas of the valley below. If you need suggestions on where to go, Teal and Russ are happy to make suggestions as they are experts on the area.

In addition to the lake, the region is dotted with waterfalls and other natural wonders waiting to be explored. The charming towns of Palmer to the north and Chugiak to the south provide a taste of local Alaskan culture, with quaint shops, local eateries, and scenic spots to explore. Whether you’re drawn to the adventure of mountain biking or the tranquility of a peaceful lakeside walk, the Eklutna Valley has something to offer every type of traveler. One restaurant I highly recommend is Feather & Flour, but be sure to make reservations well in advance.
