What’s in “Bishop?” Let me tell you…

After a couple of days in Yosemite National Park, I continued my journey south.  I met a young women (Adrianne) who worked at the Chalet View Lodge, a place I stayed a week earlier, who overheard me talking about my upcoming desired destinations.  As soon as she heard me mention “Death Valley” she said, “that’s my neck of the woods.”  She recommended that I stop in Bishop, CA and try out two places…the famous bakery (who knew there was a famous bakery in Bishop?) and a Mexican restaurant.  The timing was good for both and the gas was much cheaper than I’d been paying.  First stop was the Erick Schat’s Bakkery…as soon as I pulled up I could tell why this place was “famous.”  It’s a Bishop staple and quite large…they sell every fresh baked good you can imagine.  I picked up a few items for the road, including one of my favorites…apple strudel.  Good stuff!  Really thankful for the suggestion.

The “Mexican restaurant” was the next stop…and I was starving!  Adrianne told me that this restaurant was outstanding…and, she was not biased even though her sister owned the place.  Adrianne had given me a note with all the info and I had been carrying it in my pockets for days.  Wouldn’t you know it, just when I got to Bishop and needed to retrieve the note that it had disappeared.  I do recall throwing a number of things away at the gas station and I think the note with the name of the Mexican restaurant must of been one of them. I began using my smartphone to get a listing of all the Mexican restaurants in Bishop to see if any sounded familiar…who knew there would be so many restaurants in this small town selling Mexican food.  Well, a couple of them sounded like possible contenders, so I went by two of them and asked for the owner…however neither were owned by a female with a sister named “Adrianne.” Desperate, I called the Chalet View Lodge to ask Adrianne the name of her sister’s restaurant, but unfortunately she was not working that day.  I asked “Megan” I think it was, if she could perhaps call Adrianne at home and have her call me.  To my dismay I never heard back.  I tried one more Mexican restaurant, but it too was not the one.  I had an early dinner there nonetheless and it was just okay.  Sure do wish I could have eaten at the “good” Mexican restaurant in Bishop.  🙂

It was getting late and I didn’t think I would make it to Death Valley before nightfall, so I found a nice campground near a creek about 20 miles outside of Bishop to call it a day.

  1. Well, hell, I wish I’d discovered you sooner. I was in Bishop at the same time you were, sitting with my dad in the hospital there. I lived in Mammoth Lakes and Bishop, and played in the entire Eastern Sierra corridor, from Tahoe to Lone Pine, for decades. I’m in New York state now, and I do miss those mountains.

I love what you’re doing here, and wish you the best.

    1. Hi Hank…thanks so much for the note. So sorry to hear about your Dad…mine is getting up there in age and I can’t imagine how difficult it would/will be to lose him. Thanks for the best wishes. Cheers, Mike.
