An ‘Ear Coning’ Demonstration
A few weeks ago I had been wind surfing in Vancouver, B.C. and got some water in my ear…a day later I began to experience an ear ache. My body does a pretty good job of healing itself, so I just left it alone for a few days. As a week approached, a possible treatment dawned on me….Ear Coning. Ear Coning, or Ear Candling as it’s also know, is one of those “New Age” or “Alternative” practices…I really have no idea if there is any credence to its claims or viable benefits. I had done it once before and didn’t experience any harmful side effects, nor do I believe there are any. However, with that said, one should always proceed with caution. Below is an brief video I did on the process…
Ear Coning Supplies:
- 2- 4 ear candles
- A towel
- A paper or tin plate
- A sharp knife
- Q-tips
- Lighter
Ear Coning Procedure:
- You may want to play some pleasant music to create a relaxing environment.
- Rest the person’s head on a small pillow covered with a paper or cloth towel.
- Place a towel over their shoulder and clothing for protection from any possible dripping wax.
- Take the paper or tin plate and carefully cut an “x” 1 inch from the edge of the plate – with a sharp knife. Push the small tip of a new ear candle through the “x”. Angle the candle so any wax drippings will fall on the plate. Probably not a good idea to use a foam plate as I did in the video…I was in a hotel room and it was all I could find.
- Light the large end of the candle and insert the small end into the ear
- Adjust the candle in the ear to seat it.
- Allow the candle to burn 4 to 6 inches (at least half way down).
- Remove the candle and douse it in a bowl of water or nearby sink.
- You may wish to repeat this process with a second candle depending how much gunk may have been retrieved from your ear.
- You may also wish to clean out the ears with a Q-tip dipped in hydrogen peroxide.
