Church Rock an Arizona Roadside Attraction
Along highway 160 in northeast Arizona, on the Navajo Nation, the landscape is quite dynamic—rapidly changing from sandstone red rocks to a swath of odd mounds known as the Painted Desert. It’s along this route about about 30 miles southeast of Monument Valley that the landscape turns flat. Then, out of nowhere, the earth yields to a monolithic rock formation known as Church Rock. This outcropping is quite eye-catching and is tough to just drive by without stopping and having a gander at this geological formation on display.
Church Rock is nearly 500 feet tall at an elevation of 5862′. There is a crude area to pull over, park and have a look from a distance. I fence prevents passerby from getting any closer by car, but there is a trail that leads to the site.
