Feiyu Tech AK4500 Review and Video Overview of this DSLR Stabilizing Gimbal

 If you’re new to MikesRoadTrip.com, I am a professional travel blogger who also produces video content. As you might imagine, I have a fair amount of gear in my kit and frequently get stuff sent to me to test out and review. One of the tools in my video arsenal is a gimbal…which I have to say, has come along way in the past few years.

Take for example the Feiyu Tech AK4500, which is capable of handling a large DSLR or mirrorless camera. The design is radically different from my previous gimbal of choice, the Rage by EVO.

The AK4500 comes with a nice carrying case, the only problem is you can’t get the gimbal back in the case with your balanced settings. When you unbox you will find a smaller box inside the larger one, which comes with the rack focusing gear, as well as a secondary handle, which doubles as a remote control.

You may feel a bit intimidated when you unbox, as there are a lot of pieces and parts, which boils down to the fact that this is a very capable gimbal as you can see in the video. The downside is that there is a much higher learning curve.

The AK4500 really comes complete with everything you’ll need, including a short extension pole and a collapsible tripod foot. One of the things I really love about this gimbal is the additional handle, which helps increase the steadiness of your filming movements. The extra handle also doubles as a remote control, which is operated with just the wave of your hand, as you can see in the video.

One of the first things you’ll need to do is balance the unit before turning it on. Feiyu Tech has improved this traditionally tedious task by allowing the user to lock each gyroscope in place while you balance just that single pivot point. Then you can move on to the next until the gimbal is perfectly balanced. You’ll know when the gimbal is balanced when you can place the camera in any position and it will hold that position. In the video you can see what it looks like when the gimbal is not balanced.

The gimbal handle has a control center which allows you to change the gimbal headings, as well as the camera settings. Attaching the additional handle is quite easy, as you can see in the video, where I have included a tip on installation.

As I mentioned, this gimbal is outfitted with all the gear you need to perform rack focusing, which for those higher end shoots, is a great addition. There are also a number of cables included, allowing you to connect your camera so you can control your settings from the handle of the gimbal, which can be done by either the touch screen, or the toggle button.

If you encounter the gimbal drifting (as shown in the video), or not staying level, try calibrating it from the settings menu and this should solve the issue.

As you can see by the sample footage in the video, it’s quite remarkable how smooth the filming is using this AK4500 gimbal. BTW, this all the footage was shot at 24/fps, you could get even smother footage by shooting in slow motion.

This is a pretty sophisticated gimbal, with lots of features, which is great, but if you want something a bit simpler to use, this might not be the gimbal for you. That said, at $749, this is quite affordable given its camera capacity and robust features.
