Now in the San Juan Islands

After several days in the Seattle area, my sister Susanne and I road tripped to the northwesterly part of the state…to the breathtaking San Juan Islands. As soon as we got off the ferry at Friday Harbor and looked at the sight before us, a sense of enthusiasm overcame us. It was a bit too early to check into our accommodations at the Friday Harbor House, so we parked our car and took to the streets to explore.

As we got the lay of the land we saw a sign for a zip-line tour that looked interesting. My sister loves this sort of stuff so we made reservations with the folks at San Juan Zip Tour and soon boarded a bus to take us to the starting point. After a couple hours of fun we headed back to town and checked into the Friday Harbor House where we freshened up for dinner. We drove to the other side of the island to Roche Harbor where we had a wonderful meal at McMillin’s. Just before dinner we had strolled the bricked lined streets of Roche Harbor, which we found utterly delightful.

During dinner we asked our server if there was a good place to watch the sunset, he recommended the Lime Kiln Lighthouse. Before heading in that direction we had noticed a sculpture garden at the entrance to Roche Harbor, so we stopped there first to stroll around.

We arrived at the lighthouse about 20 minutes before the sun was to set. The sky was already starting to put on a display of utter beauty. The lighthouse setting reminded me a bit of Maine, with its jagged shoreline and picturesque setting.

The next day we had breakfast and then made our way to the American Camp, a historical park on the island. We then toured a lavender farm and a vineyard we we sampled some of the local vino.
